名誉教授から届いた一編の英詩「A New Year Song of the Rabbit（兎の新年の歌）」
2023年の新年を迎え、今年で満96歳になられる名誉教授の郡山直（こおりやま なおし）先生より校友会に一編の英詩が届きました。タイトルは「A New Year Song of the Rabbit（兎の新年の歌）」。郡山先生は、1954年ニューヨーク州立大学オルバニー校を卒業し、長らく東洋大学において英語と英詩を担当されました。
また、英語で詩を書き続けておられ、それらの多くが米国、カナダ、オーストラリア、南アフリカなどの国々の英語の教科書27冊に収録されている英詩人でもあります。まさに人生100年時代、“活動の中で奮闘する”先生の英詩からは、この厳しい時代を生き抜くための勇気をたくさんもらうことができます。

A New Year Song of the Rabbit
～Written for the New Year’s Day of the Year of the Rabbit,2023～（英詩）
The year 2022 was the Year of the Tiger.
The Tiger roared his loud New Year Song,
Sitting on a rock in Mongolia
On New Year’s Day of 2022,
Encouraging all the human beings to fight the corona-virus
With all their might.
And now the Year of the Rabbit, my Year, has come around.
I have briskly run up to the hilltop,
Fully exerting all the power
Of my mighty hind legs,
And now I stand on the hilltop
In the clean, fresh air of this New Year’s Day.
Standing on the hilltop, I reverently welcome the bright New Year’s Day sunrise,
And I try to sing a most beautiful New Year Song,
On the surface of this beautiful Earth.
But the war has been going on in Ukraine
Between the Ukrainian troops and the Russian troops,
Ever since the Russian troops started invading Ukraine
On February 24,2022.
I ardently pray
That all the human beings will come to comprehend the evil of killing each other
xin wars and conflicts
On this beautiful Earth.
And now, I ardently invite
All the living things on Earth to join me
As I happily dance on the hilltop
In this glorious New Year’s Day morning
Of the year 2023, the Year of the Rabbit!

兎の新年の歌 ～2023年卯年、兎の新年の歌～（和訳）
2022年は寅年だった
虎は2022年の元日に
モンゴルの岩の上に座って
新年の初吠えを大きく吠えて
人間全体がコロナウイルスに対して
全力で闘うように励ました
そして今、卯年、俺の年が回って来た
俺の強力な後ろ足の力を
フルに使って岡のてっぺんまで
俺は威勢よく駆け上がり
この元日の、きれいな、新鮮な空気の中に立っている
岡のてっぺんに立って、うやうやしく初日の出を迎えるのだ
そして、この美しい地球の表面で
最も美しい新年の歌を歌おうと張り切ってみる
しかし2022年2月24日
ロシア軍がウクライナに侵攻して以来
ウクライナ軍とロシア軍は
戦争を続けている
俺は熱烈に祈るのだ
人間全体がこの美しい地球の上で
戦争と紛糾の中で殺し合いをする悪に気付くように祈るのだ
そして今、俺は2023年、卯年の
この輝かしい元日の朝
岡のてっぺんで楽しく踊り
地球上の全生物に俺と一緒に踊ってくれと
熱烈に頼むのだ！
